“One man gathers what another man spills” – Robert Hunter
Reusing ‘waste’ as resource spawned my interest in sustainable business. Nature does this with incredible efficiency; in nature nothing is wasted as organisms fill niches where available energy and resources exist. When Leandre Melancon was working as a carpenter building sets for Vancouver’s film and television industry he witnessed vast amounts of textiles being thrown away and saw an opportunity to do something about it. Working with Kim Cathers they started Our Social Fabric, a non profit that collects scrap textiles, designs products and coordinates the cutting and sewing needed to transform these materials into useful products. We’ve first worked with them on a project for the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters developing bags used to store stopwatches given to participants in their lean manufacturing workshops and look forward to working with them again on future sewing projects.
