What makes your neighbourhood unique? Is it the local coffee shop around the corner, where staff know you by name? A mural painted by a local artist? Or a bakery that makes the best cookies in the whole city? Wherever your neighbourhood is, it’s the local businesses, with deep roots in the community, that often make the largest contribution to the local flavour.
These businesses have a profound impact on more than just the community - they’re changing the economy. According to a BDC report, 97% of Canadian consumers decided to support the local economy this year by buying local. There are many pragmatic reasons why supporting local businesses is a good idea - it’s more environmentally friendly, it supports the local economy, and it creates jobs for locals. But there are a few less tangible reasons buying local is so important to so many people.
As Bryan Pearson, CEO of LoyaltyOne writes in his article, 4 Indisputable Signs Little Local Retail Is Becoming A Goliath, “small shops, particularly those operated by long-time residents, serve as living-and-knowing communities. They connect with the local population on trends and nearby happenings — a relevant feature among younger shoppers who know the owner and feel invested in his success.” Truly, today’s consumers have high expectations of being heard and understood - something that’s often more possible with small and family-run businesses than national chains.
At Saul Good, we’ve had our finger on the pulse of local trends for the last thirteen years. This year, we took local in a whole new direction with made-in-the-neighbourhood gift baskets.
It all started when property developer, Rize Alliance, came to us for gift ideas. They wanted gifts for the new owners of their latest development in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. Rize knew their customers cared a lot about the culture of their new community, and wanted to reflect that culture in a gift. To deliver a truly memorable gift experience that made them feel understood, we put together gifts that echoed Mount Pleasant’s local flavour and history.
